Teaching Faculty workshop

Acclaimed author and educator Therese Huston, author of Teaching What You Don't Know will lead a workshop titled "Enjoying the Adventure: Successful Approaches for Teaching What You Just Learned."

Most people don't like to admit it, but we know it's true: As faculty, we often find ourselves teaching the unfamiliar. In some instances, we're adding cutting edge topics to our courses, and in others, we're asked to teach concepts we haven't studied (or used) since we were sophomores ourselves. Add to that the call for interdisciplinary teaching, and we find ourselves a few steps outside our comfort zone.

We can immediately picture the pitfalls of this scenario, but in what ways can this make us better teachers and our students better learners? In this interactive seminar, Therese Huston shares her research and interviews with faculty from across the country. What are best practices from professors who teach new material frequently and do it well? What are some of the common but avoidable mistakes we all tend to make? Whether you?re teaching a course for the first or the umpteenth time, come join Professor Huston to reflect upon this experience of ?teaching while learning? and what it suggests for how to approach our work.
