Lifelong Learning Institute - "Modern Philosophy"

Goshen College and Greencroft Retirement Communities have created a new institute to offer mini-courses for senior adults in Elkhart County.

The third offering will be led by J. Lawrence Burkholder, Ph.D., Emeritus President and Professor, Goshen College; and former Victor S. Thomas Professor, Harvard Divinity School.

What do philosophers do? They think. What do philosophers think about? Anything. What makes some philosophers famous? They think great thoughts. What makes a thought great? A thought is great if it illuminates the cultural condition of its time. They will remain great if they transcend their time. These four lectures will show how such prominent thinkers as Emanual Kent (1742-1804), Sooren Kierkegaard (1813-1855), and Karl Barth 1886-1968), while addressing their age spoke to our time as well.

The lecture on post modernity will address the conceptual ambiguity of contemporary culture.

The four session series runs September 7, 9, 14 and 16; and the fee is $40.
