Math Knots

Teresita Ramirez-Rosas from Grand Valley State University will speak on "Trisecants of Polygonal Knots". Abstract: We say that a triple abc is a trisecant of a knot K if a, b and c are points in K, no two of which lie on a common edge of K, that are collinear, in this order, in three space. The goal of this talk is to give an introduction to the concepts of secants and trisecants for polygonal knots. Then, I will talk about my research topic that is related to counting a special type of trisecants on polygonal knots. If time permits, I will talk about the conjecture we have and I will present the ideas that I have been using in order to prove this conjecture. The talk will be elementary as I will not assume that the audience has any previous knowledge about knots (although having good imagination will definitely make things easier!).
