To Be Certain of the Dawn: Keeping the Light | Norah Amstutz Gallery Exhibit

Norah Ruth ('19) was born in Ukraine and arrived in Goshen at the age of three, a 1.5 generation immigrant. She worked as a studio assistant for potter Mark Goertzen from 2015- 2022, then completed her MFA in Ceramics at Notre Dame in 2025. Norah hosts a stop on the Michiana Pottery Tour and serves on the board of the Michiana Clay Alliance. Her practice includes one of a kind, highly decorative, narrative work alongside functional pottery. She is motivated by the role of craft in challenging the homogeneity and exploitation of mass production culture. Her practice is guided forward by material exploration in the studio as often as by conceptual ideas, and historical narratives.

To Be Certain of the Dawn began with a search for true and effective hope in a time of increasing chaos. As it stands, we are poised to inherit a bleak future of ecological calamity, economic inequality, international upheaval, and profound violence. How can art play a role in aiding resistance and contributing to tangible change? I turned to the words of individuals who had maintained a hopeful view of the human condition in dark times, whose vision helped to move humanity forward.

This exhibit will be on display in the Hershberger Art Gallery (inside the Goshen College Music Center) until November 1, 2026. Please note: to enhance the experience of these ceramic, highly decorative lamps, the windows have been covered, and the lights dimmed. Please feel free to open the doors to enter the gallery, and close them behind you. Enjoy the exhibit, but watch your step, and the height of the lamps!

A reception will be held during Homecoming Weekend. Saturday, October 3, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. An artist talk will begin at 6:00 pm.
