"Learning How to Give and Receive: African Approaches to Rethinking Aid"
Many of us assume that "service" means those of us who "have" give our time and money to those less fortune around the world. Jan Bender Shetler, Assistant Professor of History, and her family spent eleven years in Africa (Ethiopia, the former Zaire and Tanzania) teaching and working in community development programs. Shetler later finished her doctoral studies in African history at the University of Florida. She explores African concepts of reciprocity and the "gift-economy" to critique current forms of international aid.
