Piano Workshop

Matthew Hill and Beverly Lapp, piano faculty, are pleased to announce the dates and guests for the 2008 Goshen College Piano Workshop and Academy. We will gather together June 16-19, 2008, in the Goshen College Music Center, a state-of-the-art facility completed in 2000.

Our guests will Douglas Bomberger, Jessica Johnson, Catherine Rollin, and Mark Swartzentruber.

The Piano Workshop and Academy is designed to serve the professional needs of piano teachers working at all levels and in a variety of settings. A concurrent academy for piano students ages 13-18 creates a dynamic atmosphere in which teachers and students learn together and from each other.

2008 Piano Workshop Guests

Musicologist Dr. E. Douglas Bomberger is professor of music and department chair of Fine and Performing Arts at Elizabethtown College in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Bomberger is a frequent and popular piano workshop guest who uses his sessions to bring to life key figures in the history of Western music, inspiring pianists to incorporate the great narrative of music history into their teaching and learning.

Dr. Jessica Johnson is assistant professor of piano and piano pedagogy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music. The 2006 winner of UW- Madison's prestigious Emil Steiger Distinguished Teacher Award, Johnson's many conference presentations and journal articles are infused with her passion for training a new generation of piano teachers. In addition to presenting several sessions and a masterclass at the workshop, Johnson will perform in Sole Nero, a piano and percussion duo with Anthony Di Sanza.

Our 2008 composer in residence, Catherine Rollin, is a well-known clinician who brings an artist's imagination, a teacher's pedagogical insight, and a composer's need to express to her many workshops across the U.S. and Canada. A new duet by Rollin will be premiered at the workshop.

Concert pianist Mark Swartzentruber will make his Goshen debut next summer. Swartzentruber has released albums with Sony Classical and Solo Records to outstanding critical acclaim in journals such as Gramophone, BBC Music Magazine, The Guardian and International Record Review. Formerly Musical Director of the Shoestring Players Theater in North Carolina, Swartzentruber now lives in London.
