Lifelong Learning Institute - "Studies in Mendelssohn and Dvorak Symphonies"

Dr. Mary Oyer, professor emerita of music at Goshen College, shared her popular "Fine Arts" course with several generations of appreciative students. This course features study of Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 5 in D Major, to be performed by the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra on April 15; it is often known as the "Reformation Symphony," as its fourth movement is built around "A Mighty Fortress." (The same concert includes Morton Lauridson's "O Magnum Mysterium" sung by the Goshen College Choir, and the U.S. premiere of John Estacio's "Light Eternal.")

The second feature is Dvorak's "New World Symphony," to be performed by the Goshen College Orchestra on April 21. If time permits, studies may also include the symphonic dances from "West Side Story," also to be performed by the Goshen College Orchestra.

Classes are April 9, 11 16, and 18; 2-3:30 p.m., in the Goshen College Music Center, room 153. There is a $40 course fee.

Reserved tickets for the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra performance, as available, may be ordered with your course registration for $14. General admission tickets for the Goshen College Orchestra will be available at the door only for $4.
