Exhibit Opening: A Cabinet of Curiosities 3
The public is invited to a reception for the new exhibit, "A
Cabinet of Curiosities 3: Quilts, Clocks, Ceramics,
Fraktur..."
on Sunday, March 12, 2-4 p.m. in the Good Library Gallery at
Goshen College. The exhibit offers a colorful variety of
Mennonite and Amish items recently contributed to the
Mennonite Historical Library's museum collection.
At 2:30 p.m., Arlin Claassen, a
horologist, will comment on the Kroeger "wag-on-the-wall"
clock, which was brought to North America in the 1870s by
Mennonite immigrants from Ukraine in the 1870s. (The exhibit
also includes a tall case clock from the Belleville, PA
community.)
"Cabinet of curiosities" was the original name in English for
a museum. It was a room ("cabinet") in a home that contained
the family's miscellaneous collection of interesting items,
including fossils, botanical and zoological specimens,
antiquities, mementos, folk and fine art.
The exhibit is free and open to the public when the Good
Library on campus is open. The Mennonite-Amish Museum
Committee of the Mennonite Historical Library is sponsor of
the exhibit.
